NEW SQUARE. NEW NAME.

The Elephant’s new public square has a name: Dr Belfield Clarke Square. The unveiling ceremony on 21 March drew the Mayor of Southwark and Council leader Sarah King, alongside residents who helped choose it.

Dr Clarke practised from his surgery on this site for over 45 years. His formula for calculating safe medication dosages for children is still used by medical professionals worldwide. He was one of the first Black doctors to sit on the BMA Council and co-founded the League of Coloured Peoples.

The name came from a public consultation with residents, community groups and local businesses, not a corporate sponsor or a developer’s brand name.

The square sits at the heart of The Elephant, the new town centre opening late 2026.
